The Eschaton is Now: José Porfirio Miranda Against the Catholic Right’s Anti-Woke Christianity

A Response to Christopher Rufo and his Prating Pontificators

Introduction The work of Jesuit theologian José Porfirio Miranda poses a provocative question: What if, in the dominant Western narrative, it was Christianity that ignited the oxidising flame of communism? Picture a timeline from the first century to the nineteenth, where resilient groups of Christians, despite facing opposition from established powers and the church, passionately […]

Teaching the Actuality of Revolution

Aesthetics, Unlearning and the Sensations of Struggle

This book is available open access here Barely an hour goes by, it seems, without another piece from the public intellectuals of the educational ‘global theory industry.’ Lacking any roots in the existing people’s struggles of the day, this industry’s educational ‘activist-scholars’ provide a radical cover for anti-communist and anti-revolutionary politics. Despite their constantly expanding […]

The Horseshoe and the Lightning Bolt

Why the Left Should Look Beyond the ‘Tankies’ and the ‘Campists’ and Support Ukraine

Much of the revolutionary left is still confused about capitalism. Like many of my comrades, busts and statues of Lenin striding across the firmament of revolutionary history occupied a pride of place on my university office desk. And like many of my comrades, I had some T-shirts emblazoned with the letters USSR, convinced that the […]

The Risks of Omnicide Escalate as War Intensifies in Ukraine

Many observers of the war in Ukraine sincerely believe that they have a clear and convincing answer to why the war is being fought, what accounts for its dominant ontology of violence, and who is benefiting from the ensuing conflagration that entails grave socio-political, ethical, and environmental consequences devasting for the entire world. This war […]

Marxism, Pedagogy and the General Intellect:

Beyond the Knowledge Economy

From the Grasping Drive of Learning to the Resistance of Stupidity While providing a point of entry into knowledge economy discourse is a main aim of Marxism, Pedagogy, and the General Intellect, this ultimately serves as the groundwork for Derek Ford to draw out and question the underlying and often unassumed pedagogical assumptions that exist […]

Pesa Pen Picture Series: Bob Mackie

If, in the Sydney inner-western suburb of Glebe in the 1970s, you met someone who was wearing a Lenin-type cap and who addressed you with the salutation ‘Greetings, comrade,’ it was highly likely that you had run into Bob Mackie. And if you had, then it was even more likely that you were in for […]

I have previously romanticised myself sufficiently; those interested can look up Educational Philosophy and Theory, 44(5), 450-463. I am now going on 84 and, with apologies to Shakespeare and Keats, I now ‘suffer the thousand natural shocks that flesh is heir to’: that is all ye need to know.
